New Grape Resources Added to Pomology Magazine

Cultivated in many climatic zones of the world, Grape (Vitis, Vitidaceae) is among the most important fruit crops worldwide. The largest part of grape production is used for wine, about one third as fresh fruit (tablegrapes), and the remainder for other uses including raisins, grape juice and vinegar. Tablegrapes are marketed as fresh fruit and are usually cultivated in subtropical regions. Important white tablegrape cultivars are Thompson Seedless and Sugarone, and red varieties include Flame Seedless, Red Globe and Crimson Seedless. Winegrapes are cultivated throughout temperate, subtropical and tropical regions. Their cultivation which is referred to as viticulture is usually less intensive than grape cultivation for fresh fruits.
Recommended publications covering grapes in Pomology.org’s collection of fruit crops include the Guide “Fruit Production for the Home Gardener” published by the College of Agricultural Sciences of the Pennsylvania State University. The website covers variety selection, planting, nutritional requirements, pruning, and management of diseases and insect and nematode pests. The most popular resource in this category is, however, the website of the Texas Winegrape Network of Texas A&M University. According to the publishers the Texas Winegrape Network is “a comprehensive information resource for grape growers and wine makers” and features educational opportunities as well as a “Great Vineyards Program”. The purpose of the latter program is “to help Texas grape producers improve the productivity and fruit quality of their vineyards.” A resource for professional growers is the “Muscadine Grape Diseases and Their Control” website of the Plant Pathology Extension of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences of North Carolina State University. Besides describing individual diseases it also provides recommendations for their treatment with fungicides.
Pomology.org was launched in 1996 and has emerged as a comprehensive aggregator of websites and science references in the applied life science pomology. The site is now under new management and has just been republished.
Users who wish to submit their own or their company’s website for inclusion in Pomology.org are welcome to submit their listing through the site. Furthermore, the site maintains a number of RSS feeds which enable users to subscribe to their most favorite topics within the site. One of these feeds is the “Most Shared Pomology Content” RSS feed.
