Argyll, Scotland (PRWEB UK) 18 May 2012

The Village at Machrihanish Dunes officially re-opened the historic Royal Hotel in Campbeltown on Saturday, 12 May 2012. David Southworth and Joe Deitch, owners of Machrihanish Dunes, were on hand to open the doors of this landmark hotel with a private reception followed by a grand fireworks display over Campbeltown Harbour for the community to celebrate!

Built in 1907 by local proprietor Archibald Johnston, The Royal Hotel was designed by renowned architect James Monro of Glasgow, who would later design the Grand Hotel in St. Andrews. The Royal Hotel remained a focal point for many years to come, serving families and friends from all over Campbeltown and the Kintyre Peninsula as a mainstay for weddings, celebrations and its famed Sunday tea.

After years of economic difficulties in the area which led to a slow decline in business, the aging property eventually had to close its doors. In 2008, David Southworth and Joe Deitch purchased both The Ugadale and Royal Hotels, along with the Machrihanish Dunes Golf Course, and thus began the development of the Village at Machrihanish Dunes, which includes both hotels and the newly built Ugadale Golf Cottages.

“It’s important to both Joe and I to celebrate this momentous occasion with the community that supported us through a painstaking restoration process,” said David Southworth. “The Royal Hotel holds a special place in Campbeltown history. For many, it serves as a celebrated icon where families and friends once celebrated grand occasions. For us, it begins another chapter in our pursuit to make Campbeltown and Machrihanish a world-class destination.”

The New Royal Hotel

Today, The Royal Hotel makes the most of its unmatched waterfront location overlooking Campbeltown Harbour. Guests at The Royal enjoy unforgettable views of the harbour area, with its stone piers and scenic walkways. The hotel features all the contemporary conveniences and amenities you’d expect in a modern luxury accommodation, set in surroundings steeped in old-world elegance. With its 23 sumptuously appointed guest rooms, The Royal is also home to The Black Sheep Pub, named after its famous Hebridean sheep who graze and have graced the grounds of Machrihanish Dunes Golf Course since 2008; and the elegant Harbourview Grille, which is sure to become recognised as one of the finest dining establishments in all of Kintyre.

The Village

The Village at Machrihanish Dunes consists of the Machrihanish Dunes Golf Club (Top 100 Course in U.K. & Ireland by Golf World), The Ugadale Hotel, The Ugadale Cottages (Golf Tourism Scotland’s “Small Hotel of the Year,” The Royal Hotel, The Kintyre Club, Serenity Spa, and The Old Clubhouse Pub. The recently opened Ugadale Hotel offers 22 luxurious guest rooms and suites, many overlooking the Atlantic and famed Machrihanish Golf Club. It features a restaurant and bar called The Kintyre Club, the full-service Serenity Spa and a Fitness Centre.

The Investment

In addition to bringing valuable jobs to the area, Southworth has invested over £ 19.3 Million ($ 30 Million US) to the overall project, along with grants from Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) totalling £2.2million, including £886,000 from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) funding support. In addition, HIE provided a grant totalling £ 509,606 for the development of the Machrihanish Dunes Golf Course which opened in 2009. A special grant was also awarded to the Royal Hotel by the Scottish Ministers, through Historic Scotland under the Historic Environment Regeneration Fund and the Campbeltown Town Centre Regeneration Project (Argyll & Bute Council)

Douglas Cowan, Highlands & Islands Enterprise Area Manager for Argyll & the Islands, added: “The opening of the fully restored Ugadale Hotel and Royal Hotel marks the completion of the latest phase of investment by Southworth, building on the success of the internationally acclaimed Machrihanish Dunes golf course. The development is playing a key role in repositioning the local economy providing a high quality tourism product to attract new, high spending visitors from around the world. HIE approved £2.2million, including £886,000 from the European Regional Development Fund, to support the redevelopment of the Ugadale and Royal hotels as part of our commitment to the revival of the Kintyre economy, bringing more than £3million to the economy annually. The commitment and investment by Southworth Europe is having a major impact on both the economy and confidence on the Kintyre peninsula and the opening of the Ugadale hotel marks a significant step forward for the area.”

About Southworth

Machrihanish Dunes Golf Club and the luxury accommodations in both Machrihanish and Campbeltown, Scotland are managed by Southworth Europe Limited. Southworth Europe Limited is an affiliate of Southworth Development LLC, a privately held company based in Newton, Massachusetts, specializing in the development of residential resort & hospitality branded real estate communities.

Malibu, CA (PRWEB) May 17, 2012

Passages Malibu and Passages Ventura, the world’s leading drug and alcohol rehab centers, are proud to support the first annual National Prevention Week, which is held from Monday, May 21, 2012 through Friday, May 25, 2012. This health observance is an opportunity for community members and leaders to learn more about behavioral health issues and get involved in ongoing prevention efforts.

National Prevention Week is a new annual health observance week that is supported by SAMHSA(Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration) to celebrate and support the work that community organizations, individuals, healthcare providers, and treatment centers, such as Passages Malibu and Passages Ventura, do year round to help heal and to promote mental, emotional, and behavioral well-being.

National Prevention Week’s themes are as follows:

Monday, May 21: Prevention of Underage Drinking

Tuesday, May 22: Prevention of Prescription Drug Abuse and Illicit Drug Use

Wednesday, May 23: Prevention of Alcohol Abuse

Thursday, May 24: Suicide Prevention

Friday, May 25: Promotion of Mental, Emotional, and Behavioral Well-Being

Being an alcohol and drug treatment center that takes the holistic approach to healing the mind, body, and spirit to help promote overall wellness, balance, health, and freedom from substance and alcohol dependency, Passages is thrilled that this new observance has been placed on our national calendar.

“My hope is that we can bring more awareness to the growing problems of underage drinking, prescription drug abuse, and illicit drug use this year and the years to come. National Prevention Week gives us the opportunity to just that. Bringing awareness to these important issues in our society is exactly what’s going to create positive change. Hopefully, everyone will participate in spreading the message during this week and beyond,” says Pax Prentiss, CEO and co-founder of Passages Malibu and Passages Ventura.

National Prevention Week 2012 is timed for the start of summer because, as SAMHSA explains, “Summer is a season filled with celebrations and recreational activities that can potentially be linked to substance use and abuse, such as graduation parties, proms, weddings, boating, and camping excursions. It is also timed to allow schools to take part in a prevention-themed event before the school year ends, raising awareness in students of all ages. The percentages of marijuana, cigarette, and alcohol initiates among youth increase between spring (April and May) and summer (June and July), and the timing of National Prevention Week 2012 will help to raise awareness in youth at this crucial time of year.”

If you or a loved one is in need of help with an addiction to any type of substance – alcohol, heroin, cocaine, marijuana, prescription medicine, painkillers, or any other type of addictive substance – help is out there. Passages Malibu and Passages Ventura offer customized, holistic, non-12 Step treatment plans for every type of addiction. Their addiction treatment centers in Malibu and Ventura, California are two of only 6% of the nation’s behavioral health treatment programs that have earned the coveted JCAHO accreditation.

Please join Passages Malibu, Passages Ventura, and SAMHSA in spreading the word of National Prevention Week.

About Passages Malibu & Passages Ventura:

Founded by Chris Prentiss and Pax Prentiss, Passages Malibu opened in 2001 with its second location, Passages Ventura, opening in 2009. The two drug and alcohol abuse treatment centers offer an alternative to the 12 Step/AA model of addiction treatment by taking a holistic approach with a program that focuses on the underlying issues of substance dependency, rather than suggesting that addiction is an incurable disease. Passages Malibu and Passages Ventura have earned the coveted JCAHO (Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations) accreditation, which has only been given to 6% of the nation’s behavioral health treatment programs. The co-founders are also authors of the acclaimed series of treatment books that include their groundbreaking flagship book, “The Alcoholism & Addiction Cure.” At Passages, we believe: Addiction Ends Here™.

Lemont, Illinois (PRWEB) May 15, 2012

Everest Academy in Lemont, an independent Roman Catholic school in Lemont, helps its students develop a ‘heart for service’ by offering a robust program of community outreach projects.

The extensive outreach program at Everest complements the rigorous academic curriculum, helping the school achieve its goal of a well-rounded education for leadership. Each grade at Everest, including the preschool, takes on an age-appropriate service-related project during the course of the academic year. These so-called “apostolic projects,” named for the Catholic term “apostolic” which signifies helping others out of love for God, help awaken in the students a sense of social responsibility and a desire to help those in situations of suffering or injustice.

This year the projects taken on by each grade included outreach to the needy or lonely of the community for the middle school students (grades 5 – 8), while the lower school (K – 4) took on projects to show appreciation to those in our community who dedicate their lives to serve and protect others both locally and abroad. The middle school’s outreach projects included visiting the elderly residents at Alvernia Manor, a retirement community in Lemont; Zacchaeus House, a not-for-profit home for disadvantaged men in Chicago; and “Feed My Starving Children,” an international non-profit Christian organization with a shelter in Aurora that offers free meals to those in need. The lower school took on projects such as adopting the Lemont police officers, fire-fighters, service men and women, and veterans, and sending cards and treats to show gratitude for their service. The Kindergarten is currently collecting toys and books for the new Children’s Memorial hospital, the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Hospital of Chicago, to open in June 2012.

“The students work on these service projects throughout the year, and there are other projects as well that the entire school takes part in,” says Ms. Molly Maher, Dean of Students at Everest Academy, who helps coordinate the apostolic projects at Everest. For example, the Change 4 Change program collects money each month that the students send to needy children in Mexico, to help fund their education.

“It’s beautiful to see the way the students have grown and matured through the various service projects” says Mrs. Rose Thomas of Woodridge, whose daughter Libby has attended Everest since preschool and will graduate from the 8th grade this month. “There’s an inner desire to serve, and a real sense of responsibility that blossoms in them.” Besides the projects that she has undertaken at Everest, Libby Thomas is one of many students who take the responsibility of service to those in need beyond school hours. For the last three years she has chosen to hold her birthday celebration at “Feed My Starving Children” in Aurora, where she and her friends help serve meals to the needy.

Another student, Mia Wiggins, had a great idea for her sixth birthday this spring. Instead of traditional birthday presents, she asked her guests to provide cash donations for the homeless, and contributed her gifts and other toys to the Catholic Charities of Chicago office because of their work with the homeless and needy of the community. The Catholic Charities of Chicago southwest office, located in Worth, offers comprehensive services to the needy and disadvantaged in the area, including food, counseling, employment services, and housing. Mr. Jeff Simms, regional director for Catholic Charities of Chicago, confirmed that Mia’s donation of money, food, and toys went to St. Blase parish in Summit, which offers a food pantry, evening meal, childcare, and other services to those in need. At six years old, “Mia was definitely our youngest donor yet,” said Mr. Simms.

Everest Academy gives great importance to making students aware of social realities and of their call to respond in service out of love, and strives to awaken in students a sense of social responsibility that will continue to grow throughout their lives. The success of the program can be seen in the response of the students. All of the students in the 8th grade graduating class say that they will continue to take on leadership roles in service work after leaving Everest.

Everest Academy is an independent Roman Catholic school in Lemont educating children from preschool through eighth grade. The teachers and staff are dedicated to forming the whole child by providing the highest level of academics, by building strong character, and by preparing generous leaders ready to serve the community.
WASHINGTON, DC (PRWEB) May 10, 2012

Researchers at the Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine and Feinstein Institute for Medical Research conducted a retrospective analysis which found that morbid obesity impedes kidney donation. In fact, in the analysis of 104 potential living kidney donors, 23 (22 percent) donors were classified as morbidly obese, only three (13 percent) of whom were able to successfully lose weight and donate their kidney. This data will be presented at the National Kidney Foundation (NKF) 2012 Spring Clinical Meetings, to be held from May 9-13 in Washington, DC.

Morbidly obese patients are generally excluded as organ donors given their increased risk for complications during operation and the development of chronic conditions linked to obesity (i.e., type 2 diabetes, heart disease, etc.). Researchers conducted this study to determine how often obesity is the reason for unsuccessful donation of organs, and further analyze how often morbidly obese patients successfully lose weight and are able to be donors.

“This study suggests that morbid obesity is a barrier to kidney donation, and even though morbidly obese patients reported that they were trying to lose weight through diet and lifestyle modifications, they were largely unsuccessful at losing the weight and becoming donation candidates,” said Mala Sachdeva, MD, assistant professor of medicine at the Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine and researcher at the Feinstein Institute for Medical Research. “As a next step, we must conduct larger studies that assess how vast a problem this is on a national level and determine how best to expand our living donor pool for kidney transplantation. Due to kidney shortages, there must be tangible efforts made to increase the donor pool. Perhaps potential donors who are excluded from donation due to their high BMI should participate in more stringent weight loss programs, check in much more regularly at their transplant center for follow ups, and even join social support groups as a means of motivation. Something needs to be done to increase the number of live donors but also to make it as safe as possible for them to donate.”

Additional Details About the Study

This study was a single-center, retrospective analysis of 104 potential living kidney donors between 2008 and 2011 who were grouped according to their body mass index (BMI). Those who had a BMI higher than 35 kg/m2 (which classifies them as morbidly obese) were excluded from donation. After exclusion, the morbidly obese participants were referred to a nutritionist, who created an individualized diet and lifestyle modification regimen and then followed up with them throughout the study period.

Of the 104 donors, 19 (18 percent) had a normal BMI of less than 25. Eighty five of the 104 (82 percent) donors spanned the overweight to morbidly obese classifications. Thirty eight (37 percent) were overweight (BMI 25-29.9). Twenty four (23 percent) were categorized as class I obesity (BMI 30-34.9), 17 (16%) as class II obesity (BMI 35-39.9), and six (six percent) as class III obesity (BMI greater than 40). Of the total of 23 (22 percent) who were considered morbidly obese (BMI greater than 35), only three (13 percent) succeeded at losing weight and donating. Seven (30 percent) were unable to lose weight but were trying, six (26 percent) changed their minds to donate, three (13 percent) were lost to follow up, two (nine percent) were declined for medical reasons, one declined for social reasons, and one declined due to recipient death.

WLB SERIES SOLAR LED BOLLARD

Las Vegas, NV / Victoria, BC (PRWEB) May 11, 2012

First Light Technologies is pleased to announce the launch of its WLB Series Solar LED Bollard for low-level architectural, commercial way finding, and landscaping applications.

“With this offering we continue our commitment to bring simple, effective self-contained solar-powered lighting to the $ 13 billion outdoor and architectural lighting market,” said Sean Bourquin, First Light Technologies Managing Director and Co-founder.

“Following closely on the heels of our recent PLB Series Solar LED Bollard product launch, this positions First Light Technologies as the leading designer of architectural-quality, integrated solar LED lighting products for pedestrian applications.”

First Light Technologies designed the WLB Series Solar LED Bollard to meet the landscaping needs of a large commercial client, which has already purchased 300 units. Demanding design criteria required that the lights fit a high-end architectural aesthetic, be unobtrusive, and yet provide sufficient lighting.

The resulting design is virtually indestructible and features proprietary Energy Management System (EMS) technology to ensure reliability in any environment, regardless of low-solar weather patterns or unusual charging conditions.

A visibly green statement with better performance and cost-savings

The WLB leads a game-changing generation of solar LED lights that will compete on price with traditional wired lighting while offering a range of added benefits:

Low installed cost and minimal site impact with no trenching, cabling or wiring.
Minimal ongoing costs with no electrical bills, no bulbs to change.
Immunity from power outages.
A visibly green statement without recurring carbon emissions.

The WLB Series Solar LED Bollard comes in a distinctive, robust and attractive design in 9-inch and 34-inch heights. Five choices of factory-set lighting profiles turn the light on automatically at dusk and off at dawn, and provide customizable alternatives for late-night dimming or shut-down.

A well-established photovoltaic design consultancy with over 250 projects in 22 countries, First Light Technologies builds on its extensive solar power system and LED lighting expertise to bring simple and cost-effective solar solutions to a lighting market with a rapidly growing demand for energy efficient alternatives.

According to a McKinsey & Company 2011 report, the combined market for outdoor and architectural lighting was valued at $ 13 billion in 2010 and expected to grow to $ 18 billion by 2016, while the growth of LED lighting is expected to outperform the rest of the general lighting market with a compound annual growth rate of 34% from 2010 to 2016.

“Energy efficiency is the driving force that will contribute the most powerfully to the upcoming discontinuity in the lighting industry,” states the report, concluding that installing energy-efficient lighting is one of the most cost-effective ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions while yielding substantial economic benefits. Consequently, LEDs’ share of the general lighting market is expected to grow from 7% to 70% by 2020.

First Light Technologies will be displaying the new WLB Series Solar LED Bollard and the PLB Series Solar LED Bollard this week at the world’s largest annual architectural and commercial lighting trade show and conference, LIGHTFAIR International (LFI): May 9 – 11, 2012, at the Las Vegas Convention Centre, Las Vegas, NV.

Bloomfield, CT (PRWEB) May 09, 2012

Hiren Desai is a Partner at SOMA Technology Inc., which specializes in outfitting healthcare facilities with quality new and refurbished medical equipment.

A committed business and civic leader, Mr. Desai has dedicated himself to the medical equipment industry since 1992. He has earned a diverse experience – as a strategic business leader in various roles: successful entrepreneur, sales leader, medical equipment consultant, and community activist.

As an entrepreneur, Hiren founded two companies in India, which were a dedicated diagnostic lab and blood bank. Successfully developed and sold these businesses to take up new challenges and learning experiences. To grow and exercise his acquired skills on the international level, he moved to the USA and worked as a medical equipment business consultant, focusing on emerging markets, growth analyses, and strategic business planning.

With successful project implementation, he took up a new role, as a sales leader for the domestic USA market, focusing on ASC market segments. New challenges demanded understanding the target customers’ requirements and drawing solutions to ensure the engagement of customer buying experiences. Success in sales leadership in the domestic and international markets paved his way to obtaining a partnership in the company, which brought him back into an entrepreneurial role.

Performing on the worldwide scale, helped him test and develop his skills on: understanding regional market dynamics, business traditions, regulations, procurement culture of target customers, developing recurring business revenues and scalability, implementing data monitoring and analysis systems to understand results and develop strategies to ensure the best ROI.

Furthermore, he has gained knowledge covering the wide spectrum of equipment in healthcare facilities, like categories ranging from lab diagnostics & blood banking to medical imaging, pain management, operating room, EMS, ER, and ICU product ranges.

His experience and extensive network and healthcare industry knowledge – propelled his involvement with IAMERS, where he now serves as a board member. In addition, Hiren is associated with the Disabled Trust of India, a charitable organization dedicated to educating children with special needs. Mr. Hiren serves there as the international director.
